    INTRODUCTION
    1. Reasons for the study
    First, English has become an international language in the world nowadays and mastering English grammar is an urgent need for everyone. Apparently, English has been used in many countries and in many fields such as economics, commerce, administration, foreign affairs, and daily activities etc. The more popular it becomes, the more people want to learn it. As a result, English is taught in many places under various forms.
    Second, many learners cannot easily master adverbial clauses. They sometimes do not know how to use adverbial clauses correctly. Moreover, learners seem to make mistakes so often. Thus, this study, which focuses largely on common mistakes on adverbial clauses, is expected to help learners use adverbial clauses correctly and effectively.
    Third, I have been interested in English grammar, especially adverbial clauses since I started learning English. I have so long wished to do a research on this issue. So this study is carried out with a view to giving a detailed insight into adverbial clauses in English and helping learners with their study of English.
    2. Aims of the study
    This study aimed at:
    - identifying and classifying adverbial clauses in English.
    - showing characteristic features of adverbial clauses in English.
    - finding out some common mistakes made by Vietnamese learners when using adverbial clauses in English.
    - suggesting some solutions to avoid making common mistakes.
    3. Scope of the study
    This study investigates carefully adverbial clauses in English and indicates some common mistakes made by Vietnamese learners.
    4. Methods of the study
    The study is basically implemented by:
    - synthesizing and analyzing English materials.
    - observing and consulting experienced teachers of English.
    5. Organization of the study
    The study consists of 3 parts: Introduction, Development and Conclusion. The Introduction outlines the reasons for the study, the aims of the study, the scope of the study, the methods and organization of the study. The Development consists of 2 main chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the generalization about English adverbial clauses. Chapter 2 investigates how to use English adverbial clauses correctly and effectively.
