Cassie is a shy, sixteen-year-old who unexpectedly moves to the town of New Salem. While on vacation she falls in love with a mysterious boy whom she thinks she will never see again. Shorty after arriving she finds out that an elite group of students, called The Club, rule the school. In this elite group, there are two girls who take an interest in Cassie: Faye and Diana. Faye looks down on her and takes pleasure in causing her pain. Faye wants to make a puppet out of Cassie. Diana, on the other hand, is much nicer and the two become fast friends. Cassie and Diana start to love each other like sisters.
After becoming friends with Diana the other members of the Club start to accept Cassie, even though she is not a member. Cassie finally starts to feel like she belongs, but a sudden death changes her fate forever.
It is soon revealed that the members of this Club are witches and that have been ruling New Salem for three-hundred years. Diana, the leader of the Circle, and Faye tell her the truth about her ancestry and background in witchcraft. Cassie gets initiated into the Circle because she is a witch. Cassie also discovers that her mystery man is Adam, Diana's boyfriend. Cassie and Adam are forced to make a decision about their relationship and Diana’s feelings.
