The English Absolute Phrase and Its Vietnamese Equivalence
    – A Contrastive Analysis -

"The current paper examines the structures of the absolute phrase and its Vietnamese equivalence to clarify the similarities as well as the differences between the two constructions. The absolute phrase creates a powerful effect for the text. As a result, Vietnamese learners reap the benefits of studying the absolute phrase, at least for reading comprehension and more effective writing. In addition, Vietnamese translators may render more precisely a text containing absolute phrases in English or its Vietnamese equivalent structure if they learn how to use the absolute phrase and know what its Vietnamese equivalence is. For these reasons, I will discuss three matters. First, what is the Vietnamese equivalent structure of the English absolute phrase and the significant difference between them? Second, what sorts of problems do Vietnamese students and translators have in using or translating the English absolute phrase? Then I suggest the pedagogical implications for those who teach this special kind of structure "
