    I/INTRODUCTION
Information Systems - one of the key industries of information technology - has
many applications in economic management, especially management of the business.
Information systems is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and
processing data and for delivering information, knowledge, and digital products
    1
    .Data
management in information systems plays an important role in science and technology
information, enables computerized management information systems of a business in the
most effective way to meet the requirements of business management. Applying IT in
information management has developed in many enterprises since 70s of 20
    th
    century and
brought a lot of success to business. In this report, I study four organizations in four
distinguished areas: financial services, healthcare, retail and telecommunications. In each
organization, I will discuss which IS each organization uses and how it helped
organization develop as well as future IS plan of each.
II/ INFORMATION SYSTEM AND THE MODERN ORGANIZATION
    1/ NEPAL TELECOM
    1.1 Introduction of Nepal Telecom
Nepal Telecom (NT) is the leading and the largest telecommunication company
of Nepal. It is officially named Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited. It was a former
government corporation known as Nepal Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) with
monopoly in telecommunication services in Nepal. It was converted to a public limited
company on April 14, 2004. NT has sold around 10% of its share to local market and
company's employees in 2008. Nepal Telecom was the sole provider of basic telephony
services in Nepal until United Telecom Limited started providing services in 2003.The
Central Office of Nepal Telecom is located at Bhadrakali, Kathmandu. It has branches
and other offices in 184 locations within the country. It is the sole provider of PSTN,
ISDN and Leased-Line services in Nepal. Following the entry of [Ncell] into Nepal's
telecommunications industry in 2005, it is no longer the only provider of GSM service.
With around 6,500 employees, it is one of the largest corporations of Nepal. It has a total
of 243 telephone exchanges in various part of the country serving 559,380 PSTN lines,
more than 4.5 million GSM cellular phones and 1 million CDMA phone line as of July
2011. According to recent data, there are about 6 million users of NTC including all those
    of GSM, CDMA and PSTN.
    2
    1.2 Benefits from Information Systems
In Nepal Telecom, use of computer and computer-based systems were started
from year 1984. Most of the computerizations were to bring efficiency in day-to-day
operation of telecom businesses like: Line Maintenance, Line installation, Billing, Cash
    Collection, etc.
    3
The computerization activities in NTC commenced from the Maintenance
Control Center system, Telephone Billing System in X-Based platform and thereby moved
on to ledger & Cash Collection and Inventory system with information isolated in separate
databases. During 1995, the Corporate Database Project started to bring about radical change
in overall NTC computerization activities. It mainly focused on simplifying organizational
information infrastructure to integrate all business data in one place. Computerization
activities of NTC are divided into different subsystems to solve different areas of
operation: Service Division System, Human Resource Management System, Inventory
Control System, Financial System Division, and General Accounting. Some of the
    systems are introduced as follows.
Firstly, Service Division System is designed to suit one of the core activities of
Telecom service provider. It facilitates to automate the process of telephone line
connection for a customer, right from the registration till the installation, maintain the
connected lines and keep the plant data up-to-date. This system aims to achieve following
goals of Nepal Telecom in regard to customer service.
Secondly, Billing System collects, validates, rates call data, generates bills,
collects dues and maintains ledger for the all customers registered with Nepal Telecom.
Moreover, it supports Inter Administrative Accounting i.e. management and accounting
of telecom traffic exchanged between carriers, both domestic and international.
Thirdly, thanks to Bill and Enquiry on the Internet, Nepal Telecom customers can
download their monthly statements and enquire about telephone numbers of a particula
