WHAT IS THE HOMEOWNER’S MANUAL AND WHO IS IT FOR? The Homeowner’s Manual is a practical guide to restoring historic buildings. The manual is a comprehensive compilation of both modern scientific conservation methods and traditional building techniques which should be used in conservation projects. The manual will provide fundamental knowledge which is critical in making informed decisions about conserving historic buildings in in Hoi An ancient town. The purpose of the Homeowner’s Manual is: ã To provide references for international standards of best conservation practice ã To help readers identify conservation priorities and appropriate methodologies ã To facilitate communication between homeowners and contractors ã To provide further resources to enable appropriate sourcing of materials and skilled craftsmen. HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL The manual is divided into seven chapters. The first five chapters provide a step-by-step guide to the process of conservation. Homeowners will be guided to answer the following questions: Why is my building important? What should be conserved in my building? How shall I plan the conservation work? How much will it cost?
