General human capital and specialization in academia[IMG]
In practically all industries, some workers specialize more than others. A model is presented with workers who are ex ante identical, except for differing levels of general human capital, and three previously unexplored causal tracks between these differences and workers' choice to specialize are considered, based on: substitutability between general and specialized human capital, complementarities across the outputs of different specialized tasks, and market power held by workers in their specializations. Empirical exploration of these links is performed using data from academic economists. Authors graduating from higher rated graduate programs tend to specialize less than their colleagues from lower rated programs. Implications of these results for academic salaries are discussed and tested. Finally, four new measures of specialization in academic economics journals are constructed, and a large number of journals are ranked according to these measures.
