    Preface
We are delighted to be offered the opportunity to help construct a book dealing with
important issues of development and future perspectives in gene therapy.
The goal of our work on this project is to provide a means, via the contributions of
many collaborating authors, to make our doctors become comfortable with the common
problems of gene therapy in a single accessible book.
The current volume aims at providing an up-to-date report on the field of the development
and future perspectives in gene therapy. Contributions consist of basic and
translational research, as well as clinical experiences, and they outline functional
mechanisms, predictive approaches, patient-related studies, and upcoming challenges
in this stimulating but also controversial field of gene therapy research.
We hope that our efforts and those of our collaborators will well present our specialty
and may, perhaps, inspire others to delve a bit more deeply into a topic of interest.
