The Motherhood Jane woke up at night. The room was dark and silent. The small rectangular glass panel in the wooden door let in a slither of light. She was frightened. A whole new world laid ahead of her. Turning to face the window, she slowly twisted her legs around and stretched her feet onto the cold tiled floor. She stood up slowly, a little unsteady. She was still sore, but the pain was bearable now. Creeping over to the large window, she pulled open the blue curtains. The town below was lit by the amber glow of streetlights, the occasional window in the surrounding houses still lit up and the flashing red light of an ambulance below. The handles on the clock show at 3:00 am. It had been six hours. She turned to look in the small cot where Charlie was falling asleep. She stared at his tiny face and his beautiful eyes. The white baby-gro covered him up. His tiny chest rose up and down as he slept, and his brown wispy hair stood on the top. He was amazing. Just 8 months earlier, naive-eighteen Jane had a morning sickness. She had been terrified. She and Jack had been together for 4 years. Jack was a year older than her. With his kind and loving, he had gone out and bought her a pregnancy test. Most lads at his age would have run a mile, never dreaming to buy their girlfriend a test. But Jack was different. He loved her deeply. They had been friends almost all their lives and had got together on her 17th birthday. When Jane was giving birth, Jack promised to stand by her. And he was at every step of the way. After the baby was born, Jack hugged his new-born son for a while and laid him in the cot and left the hospital. He also promised to be back in the morning. He was a proud, doting dad, and he had been happy during the birth. But Jane was still afraid. She felt so young and irresponsible, and had no idea how to look after a baby. She had wanted to make something of her life, going to university and studying medicine. How could she do that with a baby to look after? But looking at his perfect little face now, she could feel herself begin to melt. Perhaps things would be okay after all. Yawning, she leant down to kiss him and climbed back into bed, feeling a little exciting for the first time since he’d been born. As she lay there, staring at him, she felt her eyes get heavy and she fell asleep. .
