The ability of polymers to become electrically conductive was shown when a scientific breakthrough demonstrated that to become electrically conductive, a polymer must imitate a metal, which means that electrons in polymers must be free to move and must not be bound to atoms. Most polymeric materials are poor conductors of electricity because a large number of free electrons are not available to participate in the conduction process.1 In principle, an oxidation or reduction reaction is often accompanied by the addition or removal of electrons. Therefore, a polymer might become electrically conductive by removing electrons, a process described as doping.2 Doping means increase in carriers in conjugated polymers where this process involves electron acceptors and electron donors, respectively. This unexpected discovery did not only challenge the traditional concept that organic polymers are only insulators, but also established a new class of conducting polymers called ‘synthetic metals’.3,4
