    Preface
This book addresses a wide array of issues in botany through a series of chapters. The
chapters have been contributed by leading botanists from South America, Africa,
Europe and Asia, and provide an overview of recent advances and in-depth reviews of
selected topics in the wide discipline of botany. Topics covered in this book will be
useful to senior level undergraduates, graduates and researchers in various fields of
botany. The contributions fall in the broad areas of plant responses to extreme
environmental conditions which are becoming increasingly frequent given effects of
climate change and pollution; aspects related to the commercial exploitation in
agriculture and medicine; finally the advances and reviews in the important field of
plant morphogenesis and genetics. The process of creating this book was intense and
time consuming, and I would like to extend special thanks to Ana Skalamera for her
tireless effort and dedication at all stages of preparation.
