Mental disorders are more common in medical than incommunity settings [1], and some studies report that upto 40% of the patients in general medical and surgicalwards are depressed and require treatment [2,3]. This levelexceeds the 20 to 25% prevalence rates reported in studiescarried out in general outpatient facilities in Kenya [4,5].The most frequent diagnoses of mental illnesses made ingeneral hospital settings are depression, substance abuse,neurotic stress-related and anxiety disorders, [6] and theseare more frequently associated with chronic medical conditions [7-9].
