Pneumonia is one of the most common infectious diseases, and is still one of the most frequent causes of death in the elderly (1). In spite of advances in antibiotic therapy, some patients with pneumonia become severely ill due to delays in receiving adequate treatment or due to comorbidities such as cancer and diabetes. In particular, acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to severe pneumonia results in respiratory failure, prolongs hospitalization, and sometimes causes death (2,3). The influx of neutrophils into lung tissue is the initial hallmark of ALI/ARDS (2,4).
