    Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a worldwide public health concern, which often contributes to end-stage liver disease. The risk factors for chronic liver disease include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), and alcohol consumption [1]. Due to increased unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles, NAFLD, which is associated with insulin resistance [2], has emerged as a leading cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries [3-4]. The rapidly increasing appearance of metabolic disorders, including NAFLD, has also been recently reported in China [5].
