It has been demonstrated that 1,25-(OH)2D3 can reduce proteinuria in active Thy1-nephritis rats (5), progressive glomerulosclerosis and decrease albuminuria in subtotally nephrectomized rats (6), and down-regulate the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) by inhibiting renin production (7). Recent realso indicate that 1,25(OH)2D3 can decrease po-docyte loss and inhibit podocyte hypertrophy in subtotally nephrectomized rats (8). In puromycin aminonucleoside nephropathy rats, po d o c y t e i n j u r y i s suppressed by 1,25(OH)2D3 via modulation of trans-forming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-1)/bone morpho-genetic protein-7 (BMP-7) signalling (9). Those f indings clearly suggest podocytes serve as a potentially important target for vitamin D in the treatment of kidney diseases.
